Alabama woman arrested for DUI after drinking at Mexican restaurant and speeding through Summerville

According to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on March 9th, 2022, Deputy Wilks was patrolling the area of GA-1 at West Washington Street at around 1:30 AM, when he observed a white Toyota Camry traveling faster than the posted speed limit of 25 mph. Deputy Wilks reported, “[I] estimated the vehicle’s speed at or around 45 mph. Using my department-issued RADAR unit, the vehicle was checked at 45 mph in the 25 mph posted speed limit zone. [I] initiated my emergency lights and turned around on the vehicle, coming to a final stop at Pay N Tote at Highway 114 in Summerville.” According to the report, “Road conditions were wet with standing water and actively raining.” The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Lauren Michelle Kellett, 38, of Gaylesville, Alabama, and reported her eyes were observed to be glassy and bloodshot. Deputy Wilks reported, “Kellet’s slurred speech was not making much sense and was causing me to be confused. Leaning in toward the driver in an attempt to better hear and understand what she was saying a strong odor of alcoholic beverage was emitting from Kellet’s breath. [I], Deputy Wilks, asked Kellet to step out of the vehicle to speak further. While exiting the vehicle, the subject was observed to be unsteady on her feet with poor balance. [I] asked the driver if she had been drinking, and she stated earlier she was eating at EL Publito Mexican restaurant, where she consumed approximately two Michelob Ultra alcoholic drinks. During field sobriety testing, Kellet showed several clues of impairment and showed a BAC of .256 on an Alco-Senor. During a search of the vehicle, the deputy located three alcoholic beverage containers that were observed in plain view. One unsealed Michelob ultra containing alcoholic beverage along with a one sealed located in the passenger floorboard, and one handle of vodka located in the rear of the vehicle. According to the report, “Kellet was read Georgia’s implied consent notice and agreed to a blood draw.” Kellet was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail, charged with speeding, open container of alcohol, and DUI 0.08 grams or more.
