Birmingham man arrested for 2000 cold case murder of woman in Walker County

#BREAKING: According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation in the Walker County Sheriff’s Office, they have made an arrest in the 2000 cold case murder of Julie Ann McDonald. On June 11, 2000, Julie McDonald, a 42-year-old Chattanooga pharmacist who was living at 75 Arnold Lane in Walker County was found tied to a chair with a telephone cord around her neck in her living room. Her body had multiple stab wounds. At least one murder weapon was found at the scene. The autopsy suggested that McDonald was killed around Wednesday or Thursday, June 7 or 8, and the last known reports confirm she was seen in Fort Oglethorpe on June 7 around 12:09 p.m. At the time, investigators searched the house, and the only thing that seemed to be missing was her checkbook. Days later, Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two men, including Clarence George, and charged them with bringing stolen property into the state. The GBI and WCSO could never get enough evidence to charge either one with murder. Walker County Sheriff Wilson said they opened the case back up in 2015 and made progress on it. The case was eventually turned over to GBI Special Agent Daniel Nicholson and Walker County Investigations Lieutenant Billy Davis in 2023, where they did due diligent work, re-interviewing people, re-testing evidence, etc., leading to an arrest. Sheriff Wilson confirmed that Clarence D. George, 63, of Birmingham, Alabama, was arrested on Thursday, August 22nd, 2024, by US Marshalls Fugitive Task Force Agents in Jefferson County, Alabama. Clarence is being charged with murder and aggravated assault and is awaiting extradition back to Walker County, Georgia.
