Calhoun man wanted in the fatal hit-and-run of bicyclist in Gordon County turns himself in Monday morning

Jeffery Lance Hughes of Calhoun, turned himself into the Gordon County Jail Monday morning. Hughes is being charged with Felony 1st Degree Homicide By Vehicle, Felony Tampering with Evidence, Hit-and-Run Resulting in Death, Duty Upon Striking a Fixture, and Operation of Vehicle Without Current Plate. According to the Georgia State Patrol, “On February 5, 2022, at 7:26 p.m., the Georgia State Patrol Post 43 Calhoun was requested to investigate a hit and run crash involving a bicyclist and a vehicle at GA 53 and Brownlee Mountain Road. According to the GSP, a possible older model orange cab dump truck with a black bed was traveling south on Hwy 53 in the center turn lane while approaching Brownlee Mountain Road. The report stated that 52-year-old Michael Shane Robbins was on a bicycle in the center turn lane near Brownlee Mountain Road. The truck struck the bicycle in the rear tire. After impact, the vehicle fled the scene.” Robbins was airlifted to Erlanger Medical Center via LifeForce from the scene and later succumbed to his injuries.
