Calhoun teen arrested for DUI after driving reckless and crashing BMW in Gordon County

According to a Gordon County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on Saturday, July 4th, 2021, at 9:53 PM, Deputy D.J. Payne responded to the area of Solider’s Pathway and Chance Drive in reference to a fight in the roadway that involved a single-vehicle crash. According to the report, “Upon the arrival of Deputy Payne spoke with the Micheal Moises Ortega, 19, Calhoun. He advised he was taking his child some snacks and was driving 50 mph on Soldiers Pathway, a posted 35 mph roadway, and had to swerve to miss an unknown person.” He said when he did this, it caused his vehicle, a 2009 BMW 328I, to leave the roadway and come to rest in the dirt at the end of the roadway, near Chance Drive. According to the report, “Deputy Payne could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from Mr. Ortega’s breath. Deputy Payne then asked Mr. Ortega if he had been drinking today, and he stated he had three corona beers, an alcoholic beverage.” Ortega showed a positive reading for alcohol on an Alco-Sensor with a BAC of .147. Ortega showed several clues of impairment during field sobriety testing. Ortega refused the state testing and was then placed under arrest for DUI. According to the report, multiple witnesses advised they saw the vehicle driving very fast down the roadway. They advised the vehicle almost struck multiple pedestrians and had to “lock-up” their brakes, and when the vehicle did this, it caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and come to rest in the dirt. Ortega was transported to the Gordon County Jail, charged with DUI, under-age possession of alcohol, reckless driving, driving while license suspended, and too fast for conditions.
