According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, on January 15th, 2021, at around 4:41 PM, officers responded to a vehicle crash on Blacks Bluff Road at the Lock and Dam. Officer Wight arrived and witnessed the driver, April Givens, 35, of Cedar Bluff, Alabama, stumbling as she walked. Officer Wight reported, “[I] made contact with her and smelled the odor of alcoholic beverages. April thought she was on 411 and stated she swerved to miss a deer and crashed. When asked about her alcohol consumption, she stated she had one shot of vodka around 1:00pm.” according to the report, she was cooperative with field sobriety evaluations. April showed several clues of impairment during the testing. Officer Wright reported, “Based on the manner of driving, slurred speech, odor of alcoholic beverages on her breath, and performance in the field sobriety examinations, [I] determined that April was less safe to be operating a motor vehicle.” April was placed in handcuffs and read implied consent, to which she agreed. She was transported to Floyd ER for testing and medical clearance. Officer Doan assisted and worked the crash. April was booked into the Floyd County Jail charged with DUI-alcohol and failure to maintain a single lane.
