Charges pending in Friday crash that injured two on Highway 48 in Chattooga County

According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, on Friday, November 12th, 2021, at around 3:53 PM, a 2000 Ford F-150, being driven by William Shankles, 37, of Fort Payne, AL, was traveling east on SR 48 near the Alabama/Georgia state line. A 2021 Jeep Gladiator being driven by Colby Whitmer, 30, of Statham, GA, was traveling west on SR 48. According to the crash report, “William failed to yield the right way as he attempted to turn left from his lane of travel into a private parking lot on the north side of the roadway. The front end of the Jeep impacted the passenger side of the Ford. The area of impact occurred in the westbound lane of SR 48 and was indicated by gouge and scrape marks. After impact, the Ford overturned, coming to an uncontrolled rest on its passenger side, 30 feet from the area of impact. The final rest was on the private lot of the convenience store. Post-crash investigation revealed William was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash. After impact, the Jeep rotated clockwise, coming to an uncontrolled rest, 10 feet north of the fog line, facing west.” Trooper Stan Smith reported that charges are pending involving this crash. Both William and Whitmer were injured in the crash and transported to Floyd Medical Center in Rome by Redmond EMS.
