Chattanooga man killed in crash Thursday morning on Highway 193, four others seriously injured

According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, on Thursday, April 15th, 2021, at around 6:38 AM, a 2016 Nissan Altima, being driven by Jonathan Mackey, 38, of Chattanooga, was traveling south on GA 193 near Nick-A-Jack Road. A 2013 Chevrolet Equinox, being driven by Carolyn Pedigo, 58, of Flintstone, was traveling north on GA 193. The witness was traveling south on GA 193 in front of Mackey. According to the report, “Mackey passed the witness on a double yellow line (a no passing zone) at a high rate of speed.” The Altima struck the Equinox head-on. The impact from the Altima caused the Equinox to travel backward a short distance and come to final rest facing northeast in the northbound lane of GA 193. After impact with the Equinox, the Altima rotated clockwise and traveled off the roadway on the east shoulder of GA 193, and came to final rest facing north on the east shoulder of GA 193. The witnesses stated that Mackey passed him at a high rate of speed in the curve. Mackey passed away on the scene. Pedigo and three other passengers, including two juveniles, were all seriously injured in the crash. They were transported to Erlanger in Chattanooga by CHI EMS.
