According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On August 2nd, 2022, at 3:38 AM, Deputy Gomez and Deputy Fields observed a vehicle operating at excessive speed and recklessly on Lower Dawnville Road. According to the report, “Because of the manner of driving, deputies proceeded after the vehicle for safety concerns. As the vehicle continued to be operated on Dawnville Road, deputies observed the motor vehicle failing to maintain its lane of travel on two occasions. Then as it approached Thorntree Way, the motor vehicle left its lane of travel into the opposite lane and continued traveling in the opposite lane. Because of the manner of driving, deputies initiated a traffic stop with the vehicle utilizing the patrol vehicle emergency lights, and the vehicle came to a stop on Dawnville Road.” Deputies made contact with the driver, identified as Shannon Denise Phelps, 38, of Chatsworth. Phelps acknowledged the way she was driving, advising so she would not hit any animals. She stated that she was tired, and that was why she was driving in such a manner. While speaking with Phelps Deputy Gomez observed a small handgun sticking out from Phelps’s left jean shorts pock. Phelps was later checked and confirmed to be a convicted felon. Phelps was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with failure to maintain a lane and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
