According to a Whitfield County sheriff’s Office incident report, on April 9th, 2021, at approximately 11:31 PM, a deputy arrived at North Glenwood Avenue at the North Bypass in reference to a three-vehicle crash. The deputy learned that a 2004 Honda Accord struck a 2018 Hyundai Elantra in the rear. The Elantra then struck a 2005 Ford F-150 in the rear. A witness stated the Honda Accord that caused the crash sped away from the scene. A witness got several pictures of the vehicle and tag as it was fleeing. The witness also gave a great description of the hit-and-run driver. The deputy responded to an address on Lakewood Drive, which the tag returned to. The deputy observed the 2004 Honda Accord that had front-end damage that was consistent with the damage on the Hyundai Elantra. As the deputy approached the vehicle, he smelled an odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from inside. The deputy observed white paint that had been transferred onto the vehicle’s bumper from the vehicle crash. The deputy made contact with Oscar Andres, 25, of Dalton, who was asleep in his room. His brother, who let the deputy inside, stated Andres had arrived home in the Honda Accord shortly before he arrived. The deputy smelled a strong odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from Andres’s person. Andres was what kind of alcoholic beverages he had been consuming. Andres stated he had been drinking liquor. Andres would not state how many alcoholic drinks he consumed. Andres was adamant that he did not remember being involved in a vehicle crash. Andres showed several clues of impairment during field sobriety testing and consented to the state-administered test of his blood and breath. Andres was transported to the Whitfield County Jail charged with hit-and-run, following too closely, and DUI -alcohol, 0.08 grams or more within 3 hours.
