Dalton man arrested for DUI after being found passed out drunk behind the wheel on the North Dalton Bypass

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On July 3rd, 2022, at 3:09 AM, Officer Shope was dispatched to the area of the North Bypass, and Reed Road in reference to a vehicle stopped on the road. According to the report, “Dispatch also advised that the caller told them that there was a subject (later identified as Darion Lavone Chalk, 37, of Dalton) in the vehicle that was passed out. Officer Shope arrived and observed the Lincoln Town Car in the shoulder-turning lane for Chattanooga Avenue on the Bypass. The officer made contact with Darion, who was asleep in the driver’s seat. Officer Shope reported, “When [I] opened the door, [I] could smell a very strong odor of alcoholic beverage. While [I] was trying to wake up, Darion [I] noticed the vehicle was turned off, but the keys were in the ignition. [I] asked him if he had his license, and he kept trying to pull something out of the radio in the console. While speaking to Darion, [I] noticed that his eyes were extremely red and glassy. [I] asked him how he got here, and he said that he drove here.” The officer observed Darion was unsteady on his feet and detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his mouth. His eyes were also observed as being very red and glassy. During standardized field sobriety tests, Darion showed several signs of impairment and was placed under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI). Darion was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where he showed a BAC of .211 on the state test. Darion was charged with DUI 0.08 grams or more.
