Dalton man arrested for DUI after being stopped for no headlights on Walnut Avenue

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On March 26th, 2022, at 11:52 PM, Officer Marcus observed a black pickup truck traveling west on West Walnut Avenue near Lakeshore Drive. The truck was traveling without any headlights. Officer Marcus reported, “[I] initiated my emergency lights and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle. When [I] positioned myself behind the vehicle, the driver swerved to the right side of the roadway, crossing the solid white fog line several times. The driver eventually stopped, and our final stop location was the Steak and Shake parking lot on West Walnut Avenue. [I] requested another unit, and Officer Jenkins arrived on the scene.” The officer made contact with the driver, identified as John C Townsend Jr, 45, of Dalton, and could detect a strong smell of alcohol coming from John’s vehicle. The officer could still smell alcohol on John after he exited the vehicle. John immediately stated that he did not wish to take any tests and was placed under arrest for DUI. John was read implied consent and refused to take the state breath test. John was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with DUI.
