According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On May 20th, 2022, at 10: 30 PM, Officer Morang was participating in a traffic detail with Sgt. Collins in the area of Glenwood Avenue and Tyler Street. Officer Morang reported, “Sgt collins advised me via the radio that the driver of a silver Chrysler 300 traveling south on Glenwood Avenue at Tyler Street was driving without a seatbelt on.” The officer conducted a traffic stop and made contact with the driver, Alterez Alonzo Jordan, 37, of Dalton. Alterez stated that he had just left a friend’s house and forgot to put on his seatbelt. Officer Morang reported, “While [I] was speaking with Alterez [I] noticed the strong smell some type of cologne or air fresher like it had been recently sprayed in the vehicle. [I] know that this is sometimes done by subjects who are attempting to hide other smells like marijuana or alcohol beverages. [I] also saw that Alterez had an open 12 pack of bud light bottles in the front passenger seat of his vehicle. I asked Alterez how much alcohol he had to drink tonight. Alterez stated that he only drank 3-4 beers at his friends house.” During field sobriety testing, Alterez showed several clues of impairment and showed a BAC of .092 on a PBT. Alterez was then placed under arrest for DUI driving under the influence of alcohol and he agreed to the state test. Alterez was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where he showed a BAC of .085 on the state test. Alterez was charged with seat belt violation and DUI 0.08 grams or more by a person 21 years or older.
