Dalton man arrested for DUI after driving reckless and passing in a no passing zone in Whitfield County

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On May 28th, 2022, at 5:30 PM, Sergeant Southern was sitting in a gravel lot off the roadway of Carbondale Road. According to the report, “Sgt. Southern heard an engine revving before observing a gray Nissan Maxima quickly and recklessly pass another vehicle on Carbondale Road on a double yellow line. He then observed smoke coming from the front of the Maxima as it abruptly braked before nearly striking another vehicle head-on. The Maxima then lost control and spun out, driving slightly off the roadway.” Sgt. Southern then asked the driver Gage Tyler Stokes, 26, of Dalton, what was going on, and he explained that he was on his way to pick up a buddy from Minnow Way. Sgt. Southern asked why he was driving like that, and Gage responded, “I guess I’m retarded”. Gage later said a good song came on and got him excited. While speaking with Gage, Sgt. Southern reported that he could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from him. According to the report, “Sgt. Southern asked about the alcohol, and Gage said he had three or four Michelob Ultra Light’s starting around 8:00 this morning up until about half an hour ago. Gage then stated he actually had drunk probably about six beers. When asked if he knew what time it was now, Gage stated, “Uhh I reckon judging from the sun, it’s about two.” During field sobriety tests, Gage showed several signs of impairment and was placed under arrest for DUI. Gage refused the state test and was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with DUI, reckless driving, no passing zone, and failure to maintain a lane.
