Dalton man arrested for DUI after leaving Farm to Fork and crashing into ditch in Whitfield County

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On June 4th, 2022, at 2:59 AM, Deputy Fernandez, along with Deputy Koehler, Deputy Sullivan, and Deputy Hall, responded to a crash in the area of Dawnville Road and Allara Way. According to the report, “Once on scene, deputies met with Timothy Jay Mcelhannon, 31, Dalton, who identified himself as the driver. He stated that he had just got out of work at Farm to Fork and was on the way home. He stated that he was driving at approximately 52-54 MPH, and coming around a curve he applied the brakes, and they were not working. He stated that he oversteered, causing him to go into a fishtail and eventually left the roadway, crashing into a guardrail and trees.” Deputy Fernandez could smell an odor of alcoholic beverages coming from Mcelhannon’s breath when he spoke. According to the report, Mcelhannon stated that he did have two beers while at work. He later was asked the same question, but this time he stated that his boss let him take a shot of vodka for staying over late and washing the dishes. During field sobriety testing, Mcelhannon was placed under arrest for DUI and agreed to the state test. Mcelhannon was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where he showed a BAC of 0.164 on the state test. Mcelhannon was charged with DUI and failing to maintain a lane. According to the report, “Deputy Hall stated that the vehicle built up pressure when the brake pedal was pressed, leading Deputy Fernandez to believe that there was not a brake failure that caused the crash.”
