Dalton man arrested for DUI after leaving the scene of crash on Walnut Avenue and foot pursuit

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On October 28th, 2022, at 4:58 PM, Officer Allen responded to the intersection of West Walnut Avenue and South Thornton Avenue in reference to a hit-and-run that had just occurred. According to the report, The victim stated that he was traveling east on West Walnut Avenue. He was in the left turn lane and was stopped at the red light at the intersection with South Thornton Avenue. He stated that while he was stopped, a black F-150 collided with the rear of his vehicle. The victim stated that he observed that the driver was a male with a beard and was able to provide the Georgia tag on the truck.” Officer Parker went to the address the tag returned to and located the vehicle. The driver, later identified as Esteban Garcia, 41, of Dalton, fled on foot from Officer Parker, leading to a foot pursuit. Officer Parker was able to quickly take Esteban into custody. Officer Allen reported, “While [I] was next to the male, [I] noticed that he had a beard. [I] also could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath. While trying to speak to him, the male continued to interrupt me and yell at me. [I] noticed that when he was speaking that his speech was extremely slurred.” Esteban refused the state test. Officers also learned that Esteban had a suspended license. His license was suspended for DUI. Everything from the hit-and-run matched the truck that Esteban fled from. Esteban was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with obstruction, DUI, alcohol less safe, driving with a suspended license, and hit and run.
