According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On October 11th, 2022, at 3:00 PM Deputy Center was dispatched to the area of Riverbend Road near Eastbrook Road in reference to a vehicle crash. Deputy Center observed a silver Toyota Scion Xb with a Tennessee registration in the ditch between Riverbend Road and 1603 Riverbend Road. The male driver, later identified as Steven Stanley Telego, 56, of Dalton, advised he had missed his driveway. According to the report, “Deputy Center observed Telego to have very slurred speech. Telego advised his address was 1807 Walton St. Deputy Center asked Telego if he would need an ambulance, which he denied. Deputy Center moved around to the driver’s side of the sliver Scion. Deputy Center asked the male if he could step out of the car, to which he replied, “I’m alright, officer, I’m just in a lot of pain right now.” Deputy Center could smell the distinct smell of an alcoholic beverage emitting from Telego’s breath as he spoke. Deputy Center asked what kind of pain he was having. The male appeared to have to think for a while and stated it was in his foot, but it was not from the wreck.” Telego showed several signs of impairment throughout his interaction with the deputy. Deputy Center had asked how much he had drunk today, and Telego replied that he only had two drinks. During field sobriety testing, Telego showed several signs of impairment. The test was stopped for the safety of Telego after he nearly fell over several times. Telego was placed under arrest for DUI and refused the state test. During a search of the vehicle, deputies located seven open club tail cans in the backseat. Telego was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where he provided a breath sample for jail staff showing a BAC of .251. Telego was charged with DUI driving under the influence of alcohol, operation of a vehicle without current registration, and change of address.
