According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On June 17th, 2022, Officer Bethune stopped a truck westbound on East Walnut Avenue after observing that both rear tail lights were not working and the only working tail light was the third tail light near the roof of the truck. Officer Bethune then made contact with the driver, later identified as Nicolas Cordova, 38, of Dalton, and immediately noticed that his pupils were dilated even though it was bright outside which should have constricted his pupils. Officer Bethune reported, “[I] also noticed that his eyelids, hands, and face were twitching involuntarily. [I] also noticed that Nicolas’s movements were quick and exaggerated. From my training and experience, [I] know that these are all signs of possible impairment of meth. Officer Thornton and Officer Hammontree arrived on the scene and assisted. Nicolas stated that he had not used meth in over a year and only smoked marijuana recently. Nicolas also advised that he had only drank one beer. During field sobriety tests, Nicolas showed several signs of drug and alcohol impairment. Nicolas was placed under arrest for DUI and agreed to the state testing of his blood. Nicolas was charged with DUI drugs less safe and taillights-none or burned out.
