Dalton man charged with child molestation and possession of meth after incident involving granddaughter

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on February 12th, 2021, at approximately 4:04 AM, deputies responded to an address on Jericho Way in reference to a male subject exposing himself to a thirteen-year-old female. The caller informed the dispatcher that her husband, Anthony Marshall Ponder, 54, of Dalton, had exposed himself to their thirteen-year-old granddaughter. Deputies met with the father of the teenager, who informed deputies that Anthony was his father and that he was inside of the residence. A woman advised deputies that Anthony showed himself to her granddaughter. She said that she was in bed asleep when she was woken up by her daughter. She told her that she was going to the bathroom and saw Anthony walking out of the 13-year-old bedroom with his pants down. She advised that Anthony had his “stuff” out and showed his penis to the juvenile. When asked about the incident, the juvenile stated, “papa showed me his penis.” The grandmother advised that she believed Anthony was using methamphetamine again due to him being awake for four days. She then advised that Anthony sent the juvenile a text message that said, “I’m sorry, if [I] did that [I] apologize.” Anthony then sent his wife a message that read, “my fly was open, but my junk was not out.” When asked if something like this had ever happened before, the grandmother advised that Anthony’s sister had made mention of something happening when they were children. She also said that her older daughter and Anthony had used meth together in the past. Her older daughter told her about fourteen years ago that Anthony tried to perform oral sex on her in exchange for meth. The juvenile stated she was in her bed asleep when Anthony came into her bedroom around 3:10 AM. She said that he wanted her to clean up something out of the floor, and when she woke up, his penis was out. The on-call investigator was contacted to take over the case. Anthony told the deputy that he stepped in some dog pee, and when he turned around, his shorts fell, which caused his penis to come out. On March 19th, 2021, Ponders was booked into the Whitfield County Jail charged by the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office with child molestation and possession of meth.
