Dalton man found in possession of meth while being arrested for stealing $939 in lottery tickets from gas station

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on February 25th, 2022, at approximately 11:00 PM, Deputy Buchanan arrived at 3546 Cleveland Hwy the Mapco in reference to a theft. According to the report, the deputy spoke with the district manager, who stated that an employee James Dylan Smith, 29, of Dalton, had been stealing from the store. According to the report, “The manager stated that he was aware that Mr. Smith had stolen $939 worth of lottery tickets and $200 worth of other items, including sunglasses and cell phone chargers. Deputy Buchanan asked Mr. Smith why he had stolen the items, and Mr. Smith stated that he took them to pay back the money he owed other people. Mr. Smith then said he was not sure the amount he had stolen. Mr. Smith believed the total was around $939.” Smith was then placed under arrest. While searching Smith, Deputy Buchanan located a lottery ticket in his jacket pocket. Deputy Buchanan then located what looked to be marijuana in a tube in Mr. Smith’s right jacket pocket. Deputy Buchanan then located a bag with a Marijuana pipe and located a clear glass pipe with meth residue. Mr. Smith advised the deputy that the substance was methamphetamine. According to the report, “The district manager stated that they had an internal investigation trying to find out who had stolen the lottery tickets. They were able to get a video of Mr. Smith stealing the lottery tickets.” Smith was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug-related objects, and theft by shoplifting felony.
