Dalton man seriously injured in crash with semi Friday morning on the Bypass

According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report and 911 CAD, at around 10:23 AM on Friday, February 12th, 2021, a 2010 Ford Explorer Sport being driven by Alvin Whaley, 78, of Dalton, was traveling southbound on GA #71 in the right turning lane to the GA #3 By-Pass. A 2006 International semi Donald McCowan, of Cleveland, TN, was traveling westbound on the GA #3 Bypass in the right lane. Whaley was stopped for a red traffic signal, yielding to oncoming traffic. The semi had a green traffic signal, which was confirmed by two independent witnesses. Whaley, failing yield, began to turn right onto the Bypass as the semi was passing by. As a result, the Ford hit the semi in the right side just in front of the rear tandems of the semi. After impact, the Ford was dragged a short distance as it rotated clockwise. The Ford separated from the semi and came to an uncontrolled rest facing westbound in the right lane of the Bypass. The semi was pulled over to a controlled stop in the right lane of the Bypass, a short distance past the Ford. Several calls were made to 911, including a nurse who advised Whaley was entrapped and gave vital information to dispatchers. Units arrived on the scene a few minutes after being dispatched and extracted the driver, who was seriously injured in the crash. Georgia State Patrolman cited Whaley for vehicles approaching or entering an intersection.
