Dalton motorcyclist arrested on felony charges after high-speed pursuit with GSP in Whitfield County

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on Monday, March 29th, 2021, at approximately 7:51 PM, Deputy Schaub was watching the traffic on Airport Road. A Georgia State Patrol Trooper came over the radio in an attempt to raise Whitfield County Dispatch. The deputy then observed a GSP unit with his lights and sirens activated in pursuit of a black motorcycle north on Airport Road. The deputy advised dispatch that GSP was in pursuit. The pursuit turned left near the Sonic and into the Mall parking lot. A second GSP unit got involved with the pursuit. Lt. Gibson advised the deputy to stay at a safe distance and assist GSP with the pursuit. The motorcyclist, later identified as Luis Sanchez, 31, of Dalton, left the mall parking lot and drove east on Walnut Avenue. Sanchez then turned around in Wendy’s parking lot at MLK Boulevard and headed back west on Walnut Avenue. Sanchez then turned north on East Morris Street, continuing to refuse to pull over. The pursuit continued on East Morris Street and took a right onto Glenwood Avenue. They continued north on Glenwood Avenue., crossed over the Bypass, and continued onto Cleveland Highway. Sanchez then took a left into the Food Lion parking lot on Cleveland Highway and Highway 2. Sanchez then took a right and went west on Highway 2. At this time, Deputy Schaub observed the leading GSP unit and the motorcycle come extremely close to each other. The motorcycle then appeared to wobble, sending the driver off the bike. The deputy advised dispatch that the motorcycle had crashed. After the motorcycle crashed, the two GSP units placed the driver into custody while the deputy and a Varnell Officer covered them. Sanchez was transported to the Whitfield County Jail charged with possession of cocaine, possession to distribute cocaine, trafficking in cocaine, possession of a hallucinogen, possession, and use of drug-related objects, DUI, driving a motorcycle without eye protection, speeding, running a red light, reckless driving, failure to stop at a stop sign, felony fleeing/attempting to elude a police officer, driving without a valid license, failure to maintain lane and failure to maintain lane/driving on the wrong side of the road.
