According to a Varnell Police Department incident report, on October 5th, 2021, at around 2:37 PM, a Varnell officer patrolling southbound on GA-71 (Cleveland Highway) when he observed a black Infiniti G37 traveling 76 mph in a 55 mph zone. The officer approached the driver of the vehicle, later identified as Alvaro A. Valdovinos, 17, of Dalton, and explained the reason for the traffic stop. Officer Mathis reported, “While speaking with Mr. Valdovinos about his speed, [I] observed an odor of raw marijuana emitting from the vehicle. [I] then asked Mr. Valdovinos if he had marijuana present within the vehicle, and Mr. Valdovinos stated, “Yes” there was some marijuana in the vehicle.” According to the report, Valdovinos produced a handful of raw marijuana unpackaged. Chief Moreno responded to the scene along with GSP Trooper Cantrell, who arrived to assist. According to the report, While searching the vehicle, officers located a sum of money consistent with drug sales. According to the report, Also during the search of the vehicle, there was a United States Postal service box sitting in the passenger side front seat of the vehicle, and it was heavily taped up, but there was no postal information located on the package. Officers contacted the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Department Drug Unit and advised him of the traffic stop. Officer opened the box and the safe inside, where they located a large sum of currency located within shrink-wrapped food saver bags. The currency showing was in sums of $ 100’s $ 50’s and $20.00 denominations. After seeing a large amount of currency and the way, it was packaged, drug unit detectives responded to the scene to further assist. After talking with Valdovinos, he was transported to the Whitfield County Jail. According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office report, A follow-up investigation from the traffic stop led to the execution of search warrants at 105 East Hagen Street in the City limits of Dalton and 219 Frontier Trail in Whitfield County. As a result of the search warrants, Whitfield County Drug Detectives arrested Artavious Dixon, 17, Ashton Blackwell, 17, Javian Wright, 17, Joseph Fernandez, 18, and Alan Curtis, 18, all of Dalton. The detective charged Valdovinos with possession of a schedule 1 (felony), possession to distribute schedule 1/2 (felony), possession of marijuana (felony), sale or intent to sell marijuana (felony), possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (felony), attempt or conspiracy to violate VGCSA (felony), possession and use of drug-related objects, possession of tools for the commission of crime VGCSA, speeding, window tint, and no license on person. All the other teens were booked into the Whitfield County Jail charged with possession of a schedule 1 (felony), possession to distribute schedule 1/2 (felony), possession of marijuana (felony), sale or intent to sell marijuana (felony), possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony (felony), attempt or conspiracy to violate VGCSA (felony), possession and use of drug-related objects, and possession of tools for the commission of crime VGCSA. Juveniles were also cited with VGCSA possession with intent to distribute marijuana.
