According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on November 18th, 2021, at approximately 4:09 PM, Deputy McClure was dispatched to the Walmart located at 2545 East Walnut Avenue in reference to a shoplifter. According to the report, “When Deputy McClure arrived at the Walmart, he was met by the asset protection associate and Amelia Rodriguez, 62, of Dalton. The associate showed Deputy McClure security camera footage of Ms. Rodriguez intentionally scanning a 69 cent can of cat food for larger items. She stated that Ms. Rodriguez made a small purchase then left the store without paying for the items she scanned as cat food. She stated that she approached Ms. Rodriguez and asked her to come with her to her office. She provided Deputy McClure with a full list of the items that Ms. Rodriguez failed to scan, along with an exact dollar amount of $57.20 of stolen merchandise.” The items included two bath mats, multiple hand towels, chicken, curtain rod, and blackberries. Rodriguez was taken into custody and transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with theft by shoplifting.
