Dalton woman arrested after crashing vehicle on the North Bypass while DUI

According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on February 28th, 2021, at around 1:08 AM, Lieutenant Boling responded to North Bypass at Maddox Chapel Road in reference to a vehicle crash. Deputy Thompson, Deputy Pack, Deputy Hammontree, Deputy Dial, and Sgt. Pierce all responded to the area due. Deputy Thompson and Deputy Dial located a female, Betsy Santos, 20, of Dalton walking down the road with injuries to her knee, soaked clothes, and muddy shoes. The deputies spoke with Santos and determined she was the driver. Betsy was confused and unsure where her vehicle was located. During the conversation, the deputy discovered she had consumed an alcoholic beverage recently. Betsy advised deputies that she was at home drinking and that she was just out riding around in her 2015 Ford Mustang. When questioned about consuming alcohol, Betsy stated she was drinking Modelo, one big can of Modelo. When questioned about the incident, Betsy stated she lost control of the vehicle while trying to negotiate a right-handed curve. Betsy also added she was driving the speed limit, which she believed to be 40 mph. A deputy smelled an odor of marijuana emitting from the vehicle. When questioned about the marijuana and she stated she had also smoked marijuana early in the day. Betsy showed several clues of impairment and showed a positive reading for alcohol. Betsy agreed to the Georgia Implied Consent Notice for Suspects Under Age of 21. During an inventory of the vehicle, deputies did find two 24oz cans in the front floorboard of the vehicle. Lt. Boling also located a grocery bag containing marijuana in the vehicle. Betsy was discharged from Hamilton Medical Center and transported to the Whitfield County Jail charged with DUI, open container violation, and failure to maintain lane.
