Dalton woman arrested after driving drunk and crashing with two small kids in Whitfield County

According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, On June 18th, 2022, at 7:34 PM, Corporal Boyd responded to Waring Road in reference to a single-vehicle crash. Trooper Boyd arrived and observed a 2011 KIA Optima off the roadway resting against a tree. Three witnesses advised the female, later identified as Joanna Perez, 28, of Dalton, was driving with two children who were now sitting in one of the witness’s vehicles. According to the report, The witness believed Perez was under the influence. Trooper Boyd reported, “[I] did not initially smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage, but as she continued to speak, the distinct odor of alcoholic beverage began to emit from her breath. Her eyes had a bloodshot and watery appearance. Her speech sounded slurred. Perez stated she was coming at the Fiesta‚Äôs, located near the intersection of GA 71 and Waring Road. Perez stated that as she was driving, the kids in the car threw a toy, and she went to reach for the toy. During field sobriety tests, Perez showed several signs of impairment and a BrAC of .111. At the conclusion of field sobriety evaluations, Perez was asked to rate her intoxication level on a scale of zero (0), being sober, to ten (10), being falling over drunk. Perez advised she was about a three (3). Perez was placed under arrest for DUI and agreed to the state test. During a search of her vehicle, marijuana was located inside. Perez was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where she was charged with DUI, two counts of DUI (endangering a child), possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, failure to maintain a lane, failure of driver to exercise due care.
