According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On October 8th, 2022, at 3:18 PM, Officer Murdoch responded to Walmart at 815 Shugart Road in reference to a shoplifting that occurred at 12:45 PM. The loss prevention associate advised that two subjects went to check out and attempted to skip scanning a bag of shrimp. The employee stopped them, and they just moved to a different register. According to the report, The female subject, later identified as Sonia Blanco, 73, of Dalton, used a tag from a shirt and placed it on the top of a sprayer hose and scanned the item, and placed it in a bag. Sonia then paced two bags of shrimp on the register and scanned one, and when the male went to scan the other, she motioned with her hand for him not to scan it and placed both items in the bag. The total for items shoplifted was $25.99. The associate was able to provide a tag for the vehicle that the suspects left in. It came back to a Sonia Blanco and a Luis Manis. Officer then made contact with Sonia and Luis. Officer Castillo translated and explained that Walmart had caught them shoplifting. Sonia stated that the price tag for the sprayer hose was already on there and that they had left the other bag of shrimp in the store. When asked to see the package for the sprayer hose. Sonia stated that she had already taken it to the dumpster. Officer Murdoch reported, “With the evidence of the video that [I] reviewed and seeing Sonia put the shirt tag on the sprayer hose and placing both bags of shrimp in the bag, [I] placed Sonia in handcuffs. Sonia was transported to Whitfield County Jail and charged with theft by shoplifting.
