Driver flees crash scene in Walker County, leaving injured passenger behind to avoid DUI

According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, on Sunday, February 7th, 2021, at around 8:21 PM, a 2010 Mazda 3, being driven by Jaylon Gaines, 23, of Chickamauga, was traveling southbound on SR #341 near North Marble Top Road. A witness advised the investigating trooper that he was traveling northbound and that the Mazda crossed the double yellow line at a high rate of speed and appeared to be chasing another vehicle that the witness just passed. The Mazda crossed the double yellow line while negotiating the curve to the right, and Gaines overcorrected. The Mazda left a yaw mark in the northbound travel lane and crossed back over the southbound travel lane. The Mazda left the roadway on the right shoulder. The Mazda then struck the power pole and tree with the front of the Mazda. The Mazda rotated clockwise and came to rest in the southbound travel lane facing west. Gaines fled the scene on foot, leaving his injured passenger behind. The passenger, identified as Kashayla Grant, 18, of Rossville, advised that they were attempting to follow another vehicle and that she and Gaines had been drinking. All information was provided at the scene to the investigating trooper. Gaines is facing several charges, including failure to maintain a single lane, leaving the scene, and no seat belt.
