Drunk Chattanooga man assaults Dalton officer during arrest after large fight at Tenoch Bar

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, on May 30th, 2021, at approximately 2:25 AM, Officer O’Neal was dispatched to the Tenoch Bar 319 North Hamilton Street in regards to a fight in progress with multiple people and beer bottles being broken over people. Officer O’Neal reported, “[I] arrived on scene and as [I] was approaching the front doors there was a big crowd with people yelling loudly. [I] observed a male subject later identified as Juan Gerardo Gallegos-Vazquez, 25, of Chattanooga, shove another male subject into a wall very hard. [I] attempted to gain control of Vazquez, and as soon as [I] placed my hands on him, he spun around and punched me in the left cheek next to my nose. [I] quickly responded with a closed, empty hand strike to the face and nose area. This distraction strike allowed me to immediately gain control and placed him in handcuffs.” The officer reported that Vazquez had glossy red eyes and had the odor of alcoholic beverage coming from his breath and person. Officer O’Neal reported, “Once [I] had the subject secured, the crowd began to encircle me in a very hostile manner, [I] began giving loud verbal commands for them to back up till other officers arrived to assist.” Officer Bell, Herrera, Womack, and Johnson all arrived and handled the hostile crowd. They spoke to witnesses and victims, gathering information. Vazquez was transported to Whitfield County Jail, charged with simple battery against law enforcement personnel, public drunkenness, and obstruction of an officer resulting in injury. The jail staff had him blow into a portable breathalyzer, and he provided a BAC reading of .128. Officer later spoke with another victim at the hospital who was assaulted during the incident. Officer O’Neal advised he will speak with the district attorney’s office on the guidance of adding additional charges.
