According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on August 15th, 2021, around 9:15 PM, Sergeant Brunson responded to a BOLO for a Chevy truck driving southbound on Cleveland Highway, failing to maintain its lane. Sergeant Brunson then located a Silver Honda Civic at the Mapco on Cleveland Highway that had been involved in a hit-and-run. Sergeant Brunson observed a lot of rear-end damage to the civic, and the rear window shattered. Sergeant Brunson spoke to the driver, who advised he was struck in the rear by a Silver Chevy truck. The victim followed the suspect and was able to get the tag. The tag returned to a 2015 Chevy Silverado silver in color to a Leonard Cochran, 61, of Beaverdale Road. The deputy learned that there were two crashes in the area that were struck by the same truck. The Civic and another truck that Georgia State Patrol was out with. According to the report, “Sergeant Brunson and Deputy Caraway went to 1121 Beaverdale Road to locate the vehicle and driver. At 1121 Beaverdale Road, contact was made with the owner of the silver truck Leonard Cochran. Sergeant Brunson could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the person of Leonard Cochran. Cochran stated he was the only one that had been driving his truck. Cochran stated he wrecked his truck when he ran off the road on Beaverdale Road. Cochran denied striking any other vehicles. When asked about his alcohol consumption, Cochran advised he had about four beverages several several hours earlier. Deputy Caraway had Cochran blow into an Alco-Sensor and it showed positive for alcohol.” Cochran was placed under arrest for DUI and leaving the scene of a crash. Cochran was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where showed a BAC of .198 on the state breath test.
