According to a Summerville Police Department incident report, on Friday, July 30th, 2021, at around 6:45 p.m., William Odell Hardy, 69, of Summerville, was following too closely and struck a 2020 Honda Civic that was turning right into Chattooga High School on Highway 114. Hardy was traveling northbound on 114 Highway when he struck the Honda Civic in the rear end. Hardy then fled the scene and was pulled over in the county by a Chattooga County deputy, according to the report. Officer Matthew Wilson, who spoke with Hardy, noticed he “had a strong odor of alcoholic beverage on his breath,” according to the report. Hardy “admitted to drinking three alcoholic beverages” and “admitted to being under the influence of alcohol,” according to the report. While conducting a search of Hardy’s vehicle, Officer Wilson found “a cellophane wrapper containing a brown rolled-up cigarette that was burnt, containing a green leafy substance suspected to be marijuana. It was found inside the center console,” according to the report. Hardy was arrested and booked into the Chattooga County Jail, charged with DUI, driving under the influence of alcohol, following too closely, hit and run, and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana.
