Family duo arrested after attempting to shoplift earrings from Dalton Walmart

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, on August 12th, 2021, at around 4:55 PM, Officer Kell and Officer Bell responded to Walmart located at 815 Shugart Road in reference to a shoplifting in progress. Officer Bell reported, “Once on scene, officer Kell and [I] made contact with Walmart loss prevention. He advised that a male and female subject had removed two sets of earrings from the packaging and hid it on their person, which we were able to observe on video.” Officers approached the two subjects at the back of the Walmart and made contact with them. Zina Betancourt, 56, of Chatsworth, and Angel Betancourt, 23, of Chatsworth were read their Miranda rights. According to the report, “Zina continually advised that she did not take anything. The loss prevention associate then advised that they observed Angel drop the earrings on the ground as they made contact with them. Loss prevention went back to that location and obtained the earrings. Zina then advised that she had taken them but intended on paying for them. When asked why she took them out of the packaging, Zina advised that she did, in fact, plan on taking them but changed her mind.” Both sets of earrings were $14.94 each, totaling $31.97. Zina and Angel were both arrested and transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with theft by taking shoplifting. Both were also advised that they were trespassed from all Walmart affiliated locations in which they stated they understood. While searching Angel, officers located marijuana and a marijuana glass smoking pipe.
