According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, on June 25th, 2021, at around 7:45 PM, Officer Newport and Officer Dollar were dispatched by Floyd County 911 to the 400 block of Pleasant Valley Road in reference to a single-vehicle crash. Officer Newport, “[I] arrived on scene and made contact with the driver of the vehicle Cynthia Lynn Denton, 44, of Sarasota, Florida, who was already out of her vehicle.” Denton advised she didn’t need any medical attention. According to the report, Denton kept apologizing about the crash and stated that she did not know where she was. When asked what happened, Denton stated that she did not know. According to the report, Denton advised she had not been drinking and stated that she was not familiar with the area. Officer Newport observed the vehicle was resting on all four tires, but the top of the vehicle was crushed in. Officer Newport, “[I] proceeded to return to my patrol car to issue her a citation for failure to maintain lane.” Officer Dollar then spoke with Officer Newport at the rear of the patrol car. Officer Dollar stated that she had picked up the smell of an alcoholic beverage when she spoke with Denton. Officer Newport reported, “As [I] was speaking with her, [I] did detect a faint smell of an alcoholic beverage coming from her as she was speaking. Denton was asked again if she had been drinking any alcoholic beverages at any point throughout the day. According to the report, Denton stated that she did have a couple of mixed drinks with her friends at a friend’s house. Denton agreed to perform field sobriety tests. Denton showed several clues of impairment and was placed under arrest for DUI. Denton agreed to the state blood draw. Denton was transported to Floyd County Jail, charged with failure to maintain lane and DUI driving under the influence of alcohol.
