Illinois man charged with DUI after 911 call regarding erratic driver on I-75 in Whitfield County

According to the Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on September 18th, 2021, at around 5:00 AM, Whitfield County Dispatch advised via radio of a white work van that was swerving all over the roadway on I-75 southbound around the 336-mile marker. According to the report, “Deputy Caraway advised dispatch that he would be en-route to the 328-mile marker. Dispatch advised that the van had swerved over all three lanes. Dispatch then advised that the van had pulled over to the right-hand shoulder and stopped just south of the 332-mile marker. Dispatch also advised that the van had a partial tag of CK. Deputy Caraway arrived in the area and found a white van on the right-hand shoulder with Georgia tag CKK5712.” The deputy approached the vehicle on the passenger side and noticed a male, later identified as Deldrick Buford, 34, of Bolingbrook, Illinois, asleep in the driver seat with the van still running. The deputy knocked on the window until the Buford woke up. Buford stated that he was very tired and was just trying to get to Atlanta by 7:00 AM. According to the report, “While Deputy Caraway was speaking with Mr. Buford, Deputy Caraway noticed that Mr. Buford had bloodshot eyes and was slurring his words. Deputy Caraway asked Mr. Buford to step out of the vehicle. Deputy Caraway explained to Mr. Buford the reason he asked him to step out of the vehicle was that he could smell an odor of alcoholic beverage. Mr. Buford stated that around 9:30 PM, he had a couple of beers, went back to the motel, and started driving from Nashville, Tennessee, towards Atlanta, Georgia.” During field sobriety testing showed several signs of impairment and showed a BAC of .101 grams on the Alco-Sensor test. Buford was then placed under arrest for DUI Driving Under the Influence. Buford was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, where he showed a BAC of .110 grams on the state test. Buford was charged with DUI 0.08 grams or more.
