LaFayette man killed in serious single-vehicle crash on Highway 27 in Walker County

According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, on Sunday, October 17th, 2021, at around 2:30 PM, a 2006 Chevrolet HHR being driven by Destiny Coats, 22, of Summerville, was traveling south on GA-1 near Saddle Ridge Elementary School in the right lane. According to the crash report, “The HHR with its passenger’s side tires, exited the roadway on the west shoulder of GA-1. Coats overcorrected to the left, and the HHR started to rotate Counterclockwise. Coats then overcorrected to the right, and the HHR started to rotate clockwise before exiting the west shoulder of GA-1. The HHR continued to rotate clockwise on the west shoulder of GA 1. Vehicle #1 started to overturn as it struck a tree with its driver’s side door. The HHR came to an uncontrolled rest on the west shoulder facing south. Area of impact was determined by yaw marks on the roadway, location of the HHR exiting the roadway, and location of impact to the vehicle.” According to the report, GSP SCRT A is assisting with the crash investigating. According to the report, passenger William Ellison, 23, of Lafayette, was not wearing a seatbelt and suffered fatal injuries in the crash. Coats was also not wearing a seatbelt and was seriously injured. She was transported to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga by LifeForce. A one-year-old female passenger was injured and transported to Erlanger by CHI EMS.
