Lithonia man leads GSP troopers on 120 mph multi-county pursuit after shooting parents in DeKalb County

According to a Georgia State Patrol incident report, On July 3rd, 2021, at 8:09 AM, while operating moving RADAR on GA 53 in Gordon County, Sgt. Shamblin observed a black Toyota Rav4 speeding southbound at Franklin Road at 74 mph in a 55 mph zone. Sgt. Shamblin trooper, “As [I] made a turn around back south, [I] observed the vehicle was slowly increasing the distance from other traffic. [I] continued south in an effort to catch up to the vehicle. [I] observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed at that time and obtained a speed check of 95 mph in a 55 mph zone. [I] closed the distance to the vehicle on GA 53 at Brownlee Mountain Road as [I] obtained another speed check of 120 mph in a 45 mph zone. [I] then notified the Troop A Communications center that [I] was in pursuit.” The driver, later identified as Desham Patrick Walter Hotobah-During, 23, of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia, was now traveling in a very reckless manner, passing multiple vehicles in the center turn lane. The pursuit entered Floyd County on GA 53, where Desham the red light at GA 53 and GA 140 in the left turn lane. The pursuit then continued west on Pierce Hill Road. Desham reached speeds of 80 mph in a 30 mph zone while on Pierce Hill Road. Sgt. Shamblin then lost a visual of Desham. At approximately 8:22 AM, SFC. Harris observed the vehicle entering Chattooga County on GA 1. SFC. Harris attempted to stop Desham resulting in a pursuit. According to the report, “Sgt. Shamblin made contact with the registered owner of the vehicle involved. The owner stated that earlier today, his son Desham Hotobah-During had maliciously shot both he and his wife at their residence in Lithonia, GA. The man stated his son then took the vehicle. After obtaining this information, Sgt. Shamblin checked the suspect thru GCIC. The picture he obtained matched the driver involved in the pursuit.” According to reports, Dedham was arrested in Alabama and extradited back to DeKalb County, where he was booked on multiple aggravated assault charges. On August 20th, 2022, he was released and booked into the Gordon County Jail, charged with warrants for felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, no-passing zones, reckless driving, speeding (120 in 55), and speeding (74 in 55). On August 28th, 2022, he was booked into the Chattooga County Jail, charged with felony fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer x2, no-passing zones x8, aggressive driving, reckless driving x2, speeding x4, and failure to maintain a single lane x4. Desham was released on a $15,000 bond.
