Man seriously injured after slamming into rear of school bus on Hwy 27 in Walker County

According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, On November 2nd, 2022, at 4:26 PM, a 2020 Ford F-250 Super Duty Atlanta Gas Light truck being driven by Randy Bowers, 61, of Chickamauga, and Walker County School Bus was traveling northbound on GA -1 near Victory Way (65 MPH zone) in the right travel lane. The driver of the bus, Oscar Vanhook, 73, Ringgold, advised that he came to a stop to allow children to exit the bus. According to the crash report, “A 12-year-old girl on the bus was standing up and attempting to step down, on the first step, to exit the bus. Vanhook advised that the bus was struck at that time. Bowers advised that the school bus came to an abrupt stop in front of him and that he was unable to stop in time. The F-250 slammed into the school bus on the right rear corner with the left front corner of the F-250. The F-250 then continued down the right side of the school bus and then separated away.” the F-250 then went back into the bus, crashing into the entrance/exit door on the bus. Sgt. Buckner reported, “Roadway evidence showed that the F-250 was in the right travel lane and applied heavy braking. The F-250 then moved toward the left travel lane and then back to the right shoulder, where it struck the school bus. The skid marks measured approximately 153 feet.” A witness who had just gotten off the bus saw the F-250 and thought it was going to hit him. A check was made with the bus barn, and the GPS tracking system showed that Vanhook activated his caution lights five seconds before he activated his stop lights. Investigating Trooper Sgt. Buckner also inspected and confirmed that the lights were operational. Bowers was seriously injured and was transported to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. Both Vanhook and the 12-year-old girl were both injured with minor injuries as well, according to the crash report. Bowers was issued a citation for following too closely.
