Marietta man found asleep at the wheel after crashing on I-75 in Gordon County, charged with DUI

According to a Gordon County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on Sunday, March 14, 2021, at approximately 4:27 AM, Deputy Jinright was dispatched to the area of Interstate 75 north around mile marker 312 in reference to a vehicle crash. While the deputy was responding, he was advised Calhoun Police Officer Phillips was out with the vehicle and stated that the driver was asleep behind the wheel. Deputy Baldwin arrived on the scene along with Deputy Jinright. Deputies made contact with the driver, identified as Fernando Mancillas Cordero, 26, of Marietta, GA, who was standing in front of Officer Phillips’s patrol vehicle. Cordero stated that he understood very little English. The deputy could detect an odor of alcoholic beverage on Cordero’s breath and noticed his eyes were bloodshot as well. Cordero advised he was not injured and didn’t need EMS. Cordero showed several clues of impairment during field sobriety testing. The deputy stopped the test because he was fearful that Cordero might fall and injure himself. Cordero agreed to the Georgia Implied Consent and was transported to the Gordon County Jail. Cordero was booked on charges of failure to maintain lane, driving while unlicensed, no proof of insurance, and DUI-driving under the influence of alcohol.
