Mississippi men arrested after speeding violation on I-75 leads to stolen gun and drugs in Catoosa County

According to a Georgia Department of Motor Carrier Compliance Division incident report, On July 2nd , 2023, 6:41 PM, MC03 Bradford was running LIDAR in the parking lot of the southbound weigh station when he checked a 2007 Chevy VAN speeding at 88 mph in a 70 mph zone. Officer Bradford initiated a traffic stop near mile marker 340 southbound. Officer Bradford reported, “[I] walked up and spoke to the driver and passenger and explained to them the reason for the stop. While speaking with them [I] smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. [I] got the drivers license and returned to my patrol car and requested for another unit. Once another unit arrived on scene, [I] had both the driver and passenger exit the vehicle and come back to my patrol car. [I] asked them about the marijuana and they both said that they had smelled the odor but there should not be any in there. [I] told them that the odor of marijuana gave me probable cause to search their vehicle and they both stated that they understood.” During a search of the vehicle the officer located a stolen Glock model 19 9mm handgun. The gun was reported stolen out of Jones County, Mississippi. The officer also located backpacks containing schedule1 substance. They advised they had bought it in a gas station in Kentucky. When asked the driver identified as Cortez Laterrence Depr Mcgrew, 30, of Hattiesburg, MS, advised the gun belonged to a guy in another one of the vehicles that was pulled over in front of them. Phillip Lynn Anderson II, 26, of Hattiesburg, MS,  arrived on scene and advised the gun was his. Anderson said he bought it at a party and did not know it was stolen. McGrew, Anderson and George Lee McMilliam, 35, of Hattiesburg, MS, were all booked into the Catoosa County Jail. Anderson was charged with felony interstate transportation of stolen property and theft by receiving stolen property in another state.
