According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on June 3rd, 2021, at approximately 7:45 PM, Deputy Southern conducted a traffic stop on a black Toyota RAV4 at Chatsworth Highway and Cherokee Drive. According to the report, “the reason for the stop was because Deputy Southern observed the vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed, much faster than other traffic as it navigated a slight curve in Chatsworth Highway. The roadways were slightly wet from rain previously this date, and the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic to get around the other vehicles.” The deputy made contact with the driver, identified as Shane Light, 27, of Sautee Nacoochee, Georgia, and noticed that he appeared very nervous. The deputy reported he could see his heart beating through his shirt. According to the report, “Deputy Southern asked him to step to the rear of the vehicle and wait while Deputy Southern checked his license and tag through GCIC. Deputy Southern requested Deputy Thompson to be en route to assist with a consent search. Mr. Light denied consent to Deputy Thompson when he asked. Deputy Southern noticed the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Mr. Light as he spoke with Deputies Southern and Thompson. Deputy Thompson deployed K9 Eddie around the exterior of the vehicle and advised that K9 Eddie alerted on the vehicle.” Light then became upset and requested to speak with a supervisor. Lieutenant Boling was advised and responded. According to the report, “During the search, Deputy Thompson found an empty Trulia can in a black bag behind the driver seat, an almost empty pineapple White Claw that was cold in the passenger floorboard, and a Four Roses bourbon bottle behind the passenger seat. All containers were opened. Hemp, marijuana, and a smoking device were located as well.” During field sobriety testing, the deputy noticed several clues of impairment. Deputy Southern then placed Light under arrest for DUI. Light was read the implied consent notice and refused the state test. Light was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with DUI, open container violation, and driving too fast for conditions.
