According to a Georgia State Patrol crash report, on Thursday, January 14th, 2021, at around 1:22 AM, A 2005 Ford F-350, being driven by Joe Matthews, 74, of Richmond, Ohio, was traveling north in the right lane on I-75 northbound near 325. Matthews failed to maintain his lane, and he traveled off the roadway onto the right shoulder, where he hit a tree with the front of the F-350. This impact caused the F-350 to overturn onto its driver side, where the driver side of the F-350 then hit another tree. The F-350 came to an uncontrolled rest on its driver side against a tree while facing east on the right shoulder of the roadway. Investigating Trooper Day reported that he did not observe any braking prior to the crash. Matthews was seriously injured in the crash and transported by Hamilton EMS to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga. According to the report, Matthews had to be extracted from the F-350 before being transported. Whitfield County Fire posted to their Facebook page, “B-Shift crews worked an early morning MVA with entrapment I-75 NB MM 326 extended extrication.” Engine 5, Engine 4, Truck 8, Battalion 1 all responded to the scene. The driver was issued a warning by GSP.
