According to a Whitfield County Sheriff’s Office incident report, on November 14th, 2021, at approximately 3:15 PM, Sergeant Southern, Lieutenant O`Mahony, and Deputy Center were advised of a shoplifter at the Walmart located at 2545 East Walnut Avenue. Law enforcement was advised that a subject with blue jeans and black and white Nike shoes was changing tags on items and removing items from their packaging. Lt. O`Mahony and Deputy Center located the male. He was identified as Steven James Smith, 28, of Resaca. According to the report, “Mr. Smith had active warrants through Murray County and Chatsworth PD. He was placed in handcuffs by Sgt. Southern. He was moved to the AP office for paperwork. A flashlight that had been removed from its package was found in Mr. Smith’s pocket. The AP associate advised he altered or swapped the price sticker on several items totaling $51. Mr. Smith was found to have already been criminally trespassed from Walmart property per their records.” Smith was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with theft by shoplifting and criminal trespass.
