Ringgold man trespassing at apartments pulls knife on Dalton officer during arrest

According to a Dalton Police Department incident report, On June 23rd, 2022, at 6:16 PM, Officer Womack responded to a suspicious behavior call at 875 Shugart Road. The officer was advised the male, later identified as Garret Anderson Sturdivant, 25, 596 Thompson Hill Road, Ringgold, was screaming and yelling and had a knife in his hand. He was wearing “Pajama pants” and pulling a pink rolling bag. According to the report, Officer Johnson and Officer Womack had already trespassed Garrett from the Dalton Village properties for loitering. Officer Womack reported, “While we were investigating why he was at the Dalton Village Apartments, Garrett became very agitated and hostile because he believed all law enforcement was out to harass him. After yelling at officers, Garrett was advised to leave the property and left down Shugart Road. Officer Womack encountered Garrett walking into the Murphy USA gas station near 875 Shugart Road. Officer Womack reported, “[I] could see Garrett yelling and screaming as he saw me pull into the gas station. He had his right hand behind his right thigh, concealing something. [I] stepped out of my patrol vehicle. Garrett was yelling “Leave me alone” “I ain’t done nothin”. Garrett yelled, “Just kill me” and quickly raised a knife from behind his back leg.” Officer Womack drew his department-issued firearm and pointed it at Garrett, giving him loud verbal commands to drop the knife. Garrett quickly raised his hands above his head and dropped the knife. Officer Johnson arrived and assisted with taking Garrett into custody. Garrett was transported to the Whitfield County Jail, charged with aggravated assault on an officer engaged in duties (weapon) and misdemeanor willful obstruction of law officers.
