Rome man arrested after assaulting and threatening to kill wife during violent domestic in Floyd County

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, On June 9th, 2022, at 7:12 PM, Officer Sangphim and LT. Hovers responded to Downing Street in reference to a domestic altercation occurring. Dispatch advised a next-door neighbor advised a female had come up stating that she was injured and bleeding from her leg from a domestic altercation with her husband. The victim advised the officers that her husband, Derek Edward Weeks, 57, of Rome, had fled the residence in his Black 2007 Honda Accord and that he had been drinking heavily. According to the report, “The victim was initially somewhat evasive in answering questions. She stated that she and Derek had been arguing because he was accusing her of having an affair with the neighbor. She stated that Derek became enraged and when he discovered that Mary was recording her, he snatched her phone from her. She stated that Derek then began “pounding” her with his fists and pounded her head on the floor, causing a visible serious, very large swollen lump to the back of her head. She also had some blood on her nose. She also stated that Derek had threatened to kill her.” She stated that Derek tried to keep her inside the house (would not let her leave). She stated that Derek “pounded on her” and kept her on the floor for approximately 5 to 10 minutes and kept pushing her back down refusing to let her leave. Officer then located Derek and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle in front of 11 Margo Trail. Officer Sangphim reported, “[I] could smell the odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from Derek’s person. [I] recovered a loaded Sig Sauer magazine from one of his pockets. Derek had cuts to his face and a u-shaped cut on his forehead that he stated was from Mary biting him. Derek said the cuts were from where Mary had broken his glasses and ripped them from his face. Derek acknowledged that he and Mary had been arguing. Derek stated that she pulled a gun on him at one point, but he reacted so quickly that she never actually pointed the gun at him. [I] did conduct Roadside evaluations (WAT and OLS) and did not find that Derek was intoxicated to the point of being over the legal limit.” Derek was transported to the Floyd County Jail, where he was charged with battery, false imprisonment, and terroristic threats and acts. The victim advised officers while at the hospital that she and Derek argued and had physical altercations on a regular basis. She then stated that the only contact she made with Derek today was when she “retaliated,” But she made sure she was “not the aggressor tonight”. Her sister said that Derek had made statements in the past that he would kill Mary and ensure she had a horrible death by inserting things into her body. Derek also threatened to kill her cats.
