Rome man arrested again for DUI after causing crash on Highway 27 in Floyd County

According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, on August 21st, 2021, at around 9:57 PM, Officer Boatfield was dispatched to 3510 Martha Berry Highway in reference to a crash. The officer arrived on the scene and observed a white Ford Ranger and black Toyota Camry sitting in the entrance to the parking lot. They were sitting parallel to one another. The officer identified the driver of the at-fault vehicle to be Thomas Mathis, 52, of Rome. Officer Boatfield reported, “While meeting with the drivers to figure out what happened, [I] noticed an odor of alcoholic beverage coming from Thomas’ person.” The other driver advised that she asked the clerk to call, as she observed that Thomas was visibly impaired. According to the report, She stated that Thomas was disparately trying to get her not to call the police because he “did not have a license” and asked her to wait until his uncle to get here so that they could “pretend” that he was the driver. Officer Puckett arrived to assist with the DUI investigation. According to the report, Both officers observed Thomas stumbling in the parking lot shortly before this interaction. Dispatch advised that Thomas’ license was also suspended for a previous DUI. Officer Boatfield reported, “[I] asked him [Thomas] if he had anything to drink tonight, and he first advised that he had not. [I] asked him again, and he advised that he maybe had something to drink earlier. Thomas advised that he last had something to drink in the afternoon. Thomas stated that he had a couple of bud light beers at about 2 o’clock.” According to the report, Thomas showed several clues of impairment during field sobriety tests and at some point during the test said, “you should just go ahead and arrest me.” Thomas agreed to the Georgia Implied Consent Notice. Thomas was then transported to the Floyd County Jail, charged with DUI driving while under the influence of alcohol, and driving while license is suspended.
