According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, on July 4th, 2021, at around 4:25 AM, Officer Boatfield was dispatched to Flat Rock Road near Middleton Road in reference to a possible crash. According to the report, “Dispatch advised that the caller stated that the male driver was possibly drunk or on drugs. Officer Puckett was dispatched as a backup unit.” Officer Boatfield reported, “[I] arrived on scene and observed a red Suzuki Grand Vitara sitting halfway in the roadway and halfway in the shallow ditch. Immediately upon the activation of my blue lights, the male driver exited the driver’s door and walked up to my patrol vehicle. Based on my knowledge and training, I could immediately tell by his mannerisms that he was under the influence of some type of drug or alcohol.” The officer asked the man later identified as Christopher Dale Hudgins, 36, of Rome, what happened, and he stated that he “really didn’t remember.” Officer Boatfield reported, “The whole time during the meeting with Christopher, he could not maintain one position and was constantly moving. [I] also noticed that his pupils were dilated slightly. Christopher went on to state that he pushed the vehicle off the road, then stated that he might have run out of gas.” Christopher showed several clues of impairment during field sobriety testing. Officer Boatfield reported, “Based on the observations [I] observed during the course of my investigation, [I] placed Christopher under arrest for suspicion of DUI. While placing Christopher in handcuffs, he became very agitated. Due to his demeanor, [I] placed him in the backseat of my patrol vehicle. Christopher began yelling very loudly and hitting his head and feet on the patrol cage. He became progressively more irate.” Christopher was transported to the Floyd County Jail. While in booking, Christopher stated to the nurse that he had some synthetic marijuana earlier. Christopher was charged with failure to maintain lane, operation of unregistered vehicle or vehicle without a current license plate, driving without a license in possession, and DUI driving under the influence of alcohol. According to online arrest records, Christopher, who is a convicted felon, has a very lengthy criminal history.
