Rome man arrested on felony drug and gun charges after traffic stop in Floyd County for tail light violation

According to Floyd County Police Department incident report, on November 26th, 2021, at around 3:24 AM, Officer Wright was observing traffic on Highway 27 near Old School Road. According to the report, Officer Wright observed a Chevrolet Blazer traveling north with no lights operating on the rear of the vehicle. While conducting a traffic stop, the officer noticed the Blazer’s brake lights illuminated. According to the report, “The Blazer stopped on the south side of the Citgo. As the Blazer was put in park, the taillights ceased to work once more.” The officer made contact with the driver, identified as Joel Thomas Aker, 35, of Rome, and advised him of the reason for the stop. Officer Wright reported, “[I] could smell the odor of marijuana coming from his vehicle. When [I] asked Aker how much marijuana was in the vehicle, he advised me that he had a “sack”. Officer Ribot arrived to assist and approached the vehicle from the passenger side. [I] noticed Aker looking at his passenger seat multiple times. [I] had Aker exit the vehicle, and [I] placed him in handcuffs.” According to the report, During a search of the vehicle, a pistol was found in a boot in the passenger-side floorboard. In the seat was a black Jordan bag which contained an ounce of marijuana, a ledger, digital scales, and $300. Inside the glove compartment was a small box of ammunition. A search of Aker’s person revealed a small plastic baggy containing suspected crack cocaine. According to the report, “When we asked Aker about the cash located with the ledger, he advised that he works and can prove that he acquired the cash through legal means. Aker unlocked his phone and opened his Chime account. The account showed transactions that were consistent with his testimony. For this reason, we did not seize the cash.” Aker was transported to the Floyd County Jail, charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, possession of drug-related objects and improper tail lights.
