Rome man causes crash in Floyd County while DUI seriously injuring two kids

A Rome turned himself into the Floyd County Jail on Wednesday on arrest warrants in connection with a serious crash that occurred on GA-20. According to the warrant while, Brandon Thomas Byers, 30, of Rome, was attempting to turn left onto Ga. 20 West at Woods Road without properly clearing westbound traffic. Byers, with a reckless disregard for the motoring public, made the turn, although his vision was obscured. He was struck by a driver traveling west who had the right of way. The crash injured a 4-year-old boy who had to have reconstructive surgery on his right shoulder, and a 10-year-old girl lost her left foot after it was amputated. The officer investigating the scene noticed Byers had a strong odor of marijuana and his eyes were bloodshot. Byers was booked into the jail charged with serious injury by vehicle felony x2, DUI-endangering a child while driving under the influence x2, DUI, and reckless driving. He was held on a $16,700 bond Friday.
