Rome Assistant Police Chief Debbie Burnett said shooting suspect Jeffrey Alfred Shedrick, 32, of Rome was arrested around 1:00 p.m. Monday on charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, violation of the Georgia controlled substances act, and tampering with evidence. Shedrick was charged with felony murder after Scott Dennis Hayes, 39, died Tuesday. He also faces an additional charge of tampering with evidence. Rome Police say Shedrick shot Hayes in the head and back but have not disclosed a motive for the shooting. Officers responded around 9:59 a.m. Monday to a call of several shots fired in the Dodd Boulevard area found Hayes on a walking trail suffering from a gunshot wound in the back of his head. The shooting took place on a walking trail that goes behind the Toyota dealership on Cartersville Highway between the Callier Forest Apartments off Dodd Boulevard. Key witnesses saw Shedrick exit the woods shortly after they heard the shots. He then got into a beat-up black Ford Focus with a taped-up rear passenger window and fled the area. Rome Police also went to Shedrick’s home at 13 Davis Street and conducted a search warrant. They stated that they recovered a large amount of marijuana and ammunition. Shedrick was additionally charged with possession, distribution, or sale of marijuana.
