Rome Police Department investigating fatal hit-and-run involving bicyclist on Redmond Circle Wednesday night

UPDATE: According to Floyd County Jail records, 34-year old Carlos Zapete Vicente was arrested Thursday and charged with 2nd-degree homicide by vehicle, hit and run, and failure to report an accident resulting in serious injury or death. 20-year old Joseph Campbell was struck by a pickup truck as he rode his bicycle on Redmond Circle at Westside Industrial Boulevard at around 7:49 p.m. on March 9. The suspect vehicle involved in the March 9th, 2022 fatal hit-and-run crash and the driver have been located. Rome PD officers are continuing the investigation. Rome PD would like to thank all media outlets and the community for their help with the investigation.

The Rome Police Department Selective Enforcement Unit is requesting information in reference to a fatal hit and run traffic crash that occurred on March 9th, 2022. According to the release, At approximately 7:49 PM, on Redmond Circle near Westside Industrial Blvd, a cyclist was traveling southbound when an unknown white pick-up truck approached from the rear and struck the cyclist. After the crash, the suspect vehicle fled the scene leaving the cyclist to die. We are seeking assistance from the public in the identification of the vehicle and or driver. The vehicle is expected to have front end and/or undercarriage damage. The vehicle may also have damage to the right front tire from impacting a curb in their efforts to flee the scene. A low resolution picture of the suspect vehicle was sent with the release and is displayed below. Rome PD officers are attempting to locate additional video of the vehicle.
