According to a Floyd County Police Department incident report, On September 30th, 2022, at 5:52 PM, Officer Newport responded to a single-vehicle crash on Calhoun Road at Ward Mountain Road. Officer Newport arrived on the scene and observed a gray 2009 Mercury Mariner off the side of the roadway down an embankment. The driver, later identified as Chayce Lee Stokes, 18, of Rome, was attempting to drive up the embankment. According to the report, “Chayce advised the officer that he was turning onto Ward Mountain Road from Calhoun Road. He stated that as he turned onto Ward Mountain Road, two vehicles were traveling at approximately 70 mph toward him. He stated that the two vehicles were racing and were on his side of the road. Chayce stated that he had to leave the roadway to avoid hitting the vehicles.” Officer Newport reported, “As Chayce was speaking to me, [I] noticed he had glassy, bloodshot eyes. [I] could also smell a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his breath as he spoke with me. [I] also noticed that Chayce had a difficult time keeping his balance. [I] asked Chayce if he had consumed any alcoholic beverages today, and he stated no. Chayce did say that he had drunk heavily the night prior” Chayce advised the officer he would not give a breath sample on a PBT. During field sobriety tests, Chayce showed several signs of impairment. Afterward, Chayce advised Lt. Hovers he did not wish to speak any further without a lawyer present. Chayce was then placed under arrest for DUI Less safe. Chayce refused the answer implied consent. Chayce was booked into the Floyd County Jail and charged with DUI and failure to maintain a single lane. Officer Newport reported, “During the transport, Chayce began asking the intern to tell him his name so he could “let his homeboys know”. [I] informed Chayce not to make statements that could be taken as a threat toward the intern. Upon arrival at the jail, Chayce was escorted inside to begin the booking process. During the booking process, Chayce refused lawful commands given to him by the jail staff, which resulted in the jail staff using force on Chayce to place him back in handcuffs.
